This was a disturbing and incredibly miserable read. There was no respite or reversal of circumstance at all. It was depraved and messed up through and through. The most horrifying thing is that some people probably do think this way and to be honest, after letting this book sink into me for a while, I'm actually feeling chilled and a little terrified.

I'm rating this a 3.5 because this was not an enjoyable book, but in terms of what it wanted to achieve, which was apparently to take us into the mind of a fucked up degenerate, it definitely succeeded in all fronts. This was an uncanny (and disturbing) character study, and for that, I do salute the author.

yikes, super dark + disturbing read! i knew what i was getting into so i wasn't surprised, but man, was i disgusted. i had a good time playing detective as i picked up the context clues + pieced together Quentin's situation as the son of a well-to-do family (who literally gets away with murder because of this fact), but that was literally the only enjoyment to be had. the rest of this read was incredibly bleak + horrifying. that's not the reason for the 3-star rating tho. ultimately, i kinda found quentin to be vapid and uninteresting as a pov character. i felt like there were a lot of interesting things the author could have explored with him, but instead he came off as not having a whole lot of depth, imo.

Sometimes I think that delving into the mind of a shitty person (in this case, fictionalized Jeffrey Dahmer if he lived in Michigan) is a white author excuse for being able to print racist slurs. I felt the same way about We Need to Talk About Kevin, though that was better for me in the exploration of maternal alienation. Zombie was gratuitous and just not good; I was extremely glad it was a short read.
