Wow, this book delivers on the title and so much more. The scope, depth and clarity of the writing and argument is impressive. It's the type of book that if you re-started it the minute you finished it, you would keep learning more. For anyone concerned about the human and environmental impact of our over consumption of cheap fashion, but still believe in the power of clothes to express who we are, this is the book for you.
At no point is the book preachy or shouty, it doesn't need to be, it presents a wealth of information in a clear, organised, committed and humane way that delivers the key messages with a heft that is hard not to be moved by. However, at no point does it feel overwhelming or generate despair instead at every stage are straightforward actions that we can all begin to take and integrate into out lives. While some may carry the burden of time and developing skills, such as mending, others free us from certain tasks and resource usage, such as spot cleaning and freezing our jeans - you have to read it yourself to find out why you'd freeze your jeans.
However, I think what I find most impressive is that this book retains a laser focus throughout on what we can do, and why we need to do this, why we need a revolution; to protect those who make our clothes and the fabrics from which they are made and reduce the impact this has on our environment through pollution and climate change. This combination of tackling social and environmental justice through our everyday acts in relation to our clothes and dress can be acts of revolution and a challenge to a hugely damaging and harmful global industry.
