I think this is the worst of the Wardstone Chronicles by far. I respect that these books are set in a different time and therefore show attitudes that do not mirror a modern audience's beliefs, but what
SpoilerTom is put through in this book is abuse.
I think this is an irresponsible piece of work. Some things ought never be normalised.

Old Gregory wants Tom to learn combat from his old apprentice Bill Arkwright, so Tom is sent away to live with Bill for a while and learn what he can about water witches and how to defend himself. Bill lives in an old mill. Tom is thrown into combat against Bill and Bill is very good being not only a Spook but also a military man.
Bill teaches Tom all he can about the dark magic of the water beings. Tom has to learn and learn fast to escape with his life.
