This really didn't do it for me. The reveal hit me like a nudge - I'm not sure why. The main narrator was doing like a brooding style voice, and maybe that came across as low-energy? The story was interesting, but I didn't really find it compelling. Maybe I would have if I had read it on paper? Glad that this wasn't my first book by Ms. Foley because I wouldn't be tremendously excited.

Very solid read — a lot of maybe predictable twists and plot points that still felt solid and satisfying despite seeing them coming . Unlike a lot of mystery books , this one didn’t have a huge chunk of exposition from 40 to 100 pages into the book. You’re thrown into it and given little tidbits of context along the way which is more how the newcomer experiences the mystery - and it’s a hell of a lot more entertaining than just having each character give you their side of the story flat out.

You’re neutral then you like then you hate then you understand then you like a lot of these characters which is a very fun way to experience them.

I read The Hunting Party by Lucy Foley which I really enjoyed so I was looking forward to this book.

There is some similar themes to The Hunting Party: it is set in one main location (the apartment building) with a closed circle of characters but for me, the execution was not quite there.

The book started off really good with an intriguing mystery and interesting characters but, as the plot progressed, a lack of events made the book drag which wasn’t helped by the constant switching of characters every chapter (I particularly lost interest in Jess, which is not helped by the fact that she is the main character).

The ending helped to redeem the rating of this book somewhat as I liked the twists
that the wine company was a front for prostitution and the concierges daughter is Mimi’s real mother. Plus Ben was writing an article to expose all this which the family wanted to cover up.

However there was a lack of clear resolution at the end as well
Ben publishes the article but we as the reader don’t really see a great fall from disgrace. Which does mirror reality but is still annoying.

I will still be reading The Guest List and The Midnight Feast at some point after a long break but I would still recommend trying this book out as you may love it.

Loved this book, great pacing and well written characters. It’s rare for the ending of a mystery to catch me off guard, but this one went above and beyond to mystify me to the very end.

I’m a fan of Foley’s work, and I’d say this is one of her best. Definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys a thrilling mystery.
