I’ve read this series 3-4 times over the course of my life, and it still holds up. Thanks for your influence on my childhood, Riordan.

This series was a ride

It was the equivalent of being 7 years old watching Saturday morning cartoons in book format. As I said in a previous review, Riordan is a master of that one Tumblr post of how to make writing truly "breathe."

My analysis of the series as a whole started when someone was bullied for saying Percy Jackson was their favorite series. Naturally, I took the challenge to actually read it instead of dog pile on it, and honestly...

It's fine.

I loved this series quite a bit, but my problem came when this final book
Spoiler all the POC died
and that kinda made it a bit sour when I finished the final page. Was it really hard for this to not happen? That being said this WAS a book written in the 2000s era so a lot of things were dated. Skin color and ethnicities were written as if they were exotic. However, I do appreciate Riordan didn't really make a big deal about it at the same time.

My other problem with this series was it was like a love note to all the brand names and chains but also hating on them at the same time? I can't tell if Riordan was held at gunpoint when he mentioned McDonalds over and over in the 4th book for instance.

Other than that, he made a very compelling page turner that made me finish this series in less than 2 weeks.

Weirdly enough, the odd similes helped me visualize the world quite a bit. Like comparing a monster legs to skiis really solidified what they actually looked like. I wanted to say the amount of similes comparing to objects kids know about would be a downfall, but it helped reinforce what Riordan wanted you to visualize and that, worked well for him.

The amount of love to the environment and making sure kids understand to value, not destroy, our world I thought was touching. While it was a tiny bit preachy, I understand it's need in this world as our current world is dying and we really do need to save it.

This review is weird and blocky cause I'm dealing with an injury but I hope future me can understand what I was feeling with this series.

Solid 3.5/5, just don't expect leaps and bounds for POC in this series

A great ending for such a good series. I laughed, cried (a little) and overall had the best time reading it (for the second time).
There is a couple of things that bother me but they wash away because of how much i liked this story and Percy as a main character (probably the first time that i actually liked the main character and didn’t get annoyed by him).

I’m still feeling the magic and excitement that I felt 10 (or more, idk) years ago and it really shows how special these books are. Forever grateful for getting to know this story❤️
