I enjoyed this book in the series as well as Anne of Green Gables. There was no slow start, I was immediately drawn into the joy and excitement of the story as Anne and Gilbert are about to be married. The House of Dreams and her attachment to her home are feelings with which I deeply relate. I love this grown up Anne who is still a reflection of her personality and dreams as a child (as we all are!). Captain Jim and Miss Cornelia are incredibly vivid, loveable characters. And Leslie brings a depth to Anne as she matures as an adult, faced with the reality of suffering.
L. M. Montgomery is brilliant:
The last day of the old year was one of those bright, cold, dazzling winter days, which bombard us with their brilliance, and command our admiration but never our love. ... Even the shadows were sharp and stiff and clear-cut, as no proper shadows should be. ... There was no soft blending, or kind obscurity, or elusive mistiness in that searching glitter. ... But finally the day began to realize that she was growing old. Then a certain pensiveness fell over her beauty which dimmed yet intensified it; sharp angles, glittering points, melted away into curves and enticing gleams. The white hills put on soft grays and pinks; the faraway hills turned amethyst. "The old year is going away beautifully," said Anne.
