I don’t know if I’m too stupid to understand this, or if it just wasn’t one of Woolf’s best. There were definitely some good lines, but overall, I finished this book having not gained anything from reading it.

[4 Stars] I enjoyed the style of this book and the experimentation. Woolf writes absolutely beautifully and that is the reason this book gets a 3.5 star rating. I also extremely appreciated her experimentation, fragmentation, and play with perspectives in this book. However, yes there is a however, this book is in all honestly slightly boring which is why it didn't get a 4 star rating. The only characters I was actually kind of interested in were Florinda, his mother, Clara Durrant, and well I suppose on some level Jacob as well. Overall it was a nice read, but not something amazing enough to warrant a 4 star rating...

“So we are driven back to see what the other side means — the men in clubs and Cabinets — when they say that character-drawing is a frivolous fireside art, exquisite outlines enclosing vacancy, flourishes, and mere scrawls.” (151)

As much as I hate to align with “the men in clubs and Cabinets…” This practically plot-free, impressionistic work had its moments of scenery and insight, but for the most part had me feeling impatient and annoyed. No doubt I owe Woolf another shot or two, but this structure and writing style weren’t my taste.
