Thank you Double Day and NetGalley for the ARC of American Mermaid.  All opinions in this review are my own.

A burnt out teacher writes the next best-selling book and moves to LA to make it into a movie. The movie executives want to make significant changes to the book which the author doesn't agree with. She also complains a lot about how expensive things are even though she admits to having money now.

I read 50 pages and I am stopping. I just don't think this writing style is for me and reading about how the movie version of the book is going to make drastic changes is painful. I think I would have rather read the book that the main character wrote than the main character's experience.

I liked this book at first but the dual story became a little hard to follow.  I felt confused by the end and just wanted the book to be over.

misogyny, feminism, climate change, asexuality, being broke but having a PhD, bad relationship with parents...she was really Hitting All the Topics™️ here

very true to the ace experience "The absence of sexual desire in her life made her see its overwhelming presence everywhere else" Derek wasn't a good person but shoutout to talking before sleeping in the same bed, "wanna bang?" "no" and then carrying on sleeping it gets me every time truly 🙏🏼

I really wanted more Siren influence, but it didn’t get going until like 1/3 of the way in.

I loved the writing of the main character but didn’t like all the excerpts from her book.

I felt like the author wrote 1/2 of a book and didn’t know how to double the word count so she broke it into this weird tale of it getting turned into a movie, and this book was the result.

Hmmmm just couldn’t. Definitely some funny moments. Annoyed with the chapters from the mermaid book.
