For the first time in my reading history I have to say that a book should've been longer. The story deals with a very interesting and important topic from Irish history, but it only ever skimmed the surface. I knew that this was a short story, rather than a full-length novel, so I didn't expect a full novel, but to me it felt like the book ended on a cliff-hanger, like the first part of a longer narrative, but no. In my opinion, the author just didn't succeed in making this part of the story strong enough to be able to stand on its own, which is very unfortunate.

I’ll read anything by Claire Keegan. I think I’ll reread this one in the late Fall/Winter and probably will end up 5 stars. Read it on a beach trip and didn’t land as strongly as I think it probably could.
