jeanette writes about her childhood in such a way that you almost forget she's experienced these things and she's not a character in a dramatic fiction story. her writing voice is so distinct and enrapturing that i couldn't help but keep reading, even during the hard sequences that made me pause. will definitely be re-reading at a slower and more thoughtful pace.

this book was a ROLLERCOASTER. i honestly hated it until the very end, not because the writing was bad, i loved the writing, but just because the story just kept on getting worse and worse until the last 70 pages or so when I finally enjoyed reading it. Honestly even tho it was such an emotional read, i think everyone should give it it a try

Less a coming-of-age story and more a diary about growing up in poverty.   These kind of stories are not my jam and I should probably stop reading them.
