What a great YA novel. A very age appropriate read for middle schoolers and upper grade school too. Strong characters with wit and depth. I also found it refreshing that (at least the first one) didn't have a love story. A girl can be badass and not be in love. I know the love story is coming, and was glad it didn't show up here.

I have loved this book for years. It is a go to comfort read in print or audio format and one I recommend to all lovers of YA with strong female characters.

Pros:

This is one of the original found family style books that I love. You meet characters seemingly slowly but before you know it you have this amazing group that you want to know more about.

Cons:

I just wish the book and series were longer and had more of Alanna’s adventures.

I have never heard of Tamora Pierce or her works until a few months when someone told me these were their favourite childhood books. I was surprised I never heard of them, After looking it up I realised they never arrived at where I'm from so I decided to dig in and see how this 80' book was so Wellbeloved.
The books had a different writing style to what I'm used to. It feels like something my parents read when they were children. To my surprise, Alanna had a very strong queer feeling to her which was wonderful. It really ties it together for me. It remembered me to [a:Leo Batic|5402632|Leo Batic|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1345908396p2/5402632.jpg] work with their themes of magic and womanhood. I want to read more books from this period, especially from Tamora Pierce.
