This was a heavier book than I anticipated but I really enjoyed it. The characters were great, and I thought Katrell's experiences with trauma and abuse and the way it impacted her mental health was well-portrayed. Also the well-meaning guidance counselor who is torn between wanting to help, and not wanting to make things worse for Katrell. The connection between Katrell's magic and her life was brilliant. My only complaint would be that it dragged on a bit at times, I think it could have benefited from a slightly quicker pace. A mixture of fantasy and too real life, this was a great book I would recommend.

I really enjoyed this title. I actually read it in one sitting which is unusual for me. I was driven to find out how Katrell was going to solve her problem of the Revenants. This book was excellent in that it kept you invested, wondering how Katrell was going to solve her home life problems as well as her magical problems. Katrell is surrounded by toxic family and the only person she can rely on is Will. Lewis did an excellent job of capturing the painful experience of loving a parent who cannot give you what you deserve. My one critique is Katrell should have thought of trying to write the Revenants back into the grave before she did, but I am glad it was addressed. The twist at the end about the true origin of the Revenants was interesting. A great picture of self love and the harm a lack of it can produce.

This was SO GREAT and delivered so much more than what I was expecting (and I was expecting a lot...)

Not only does it have vengeance filled practical magic vibes, it also brilliantly explores domestic abuse, poverty, trauma, parental neglect and the dangerous positions it can put a child in when they're monetarily relied upon and the mental and physical toll it takes.

Bad Witch Burning was gritty, addictive, emotional, intense and superbly written. If this is what Jessica Lewis can produce as a debut author, I cannot wait to see what incredible stories she has for us next.

TW: domestic abuse, child abuse, animal death, parental neglect
