Was pointed to this essay after reading an opinion piece of the futility of the word "Orwellian" and how it has been used in reaction to Trump + other public figures suspension from Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/13/books/orwellian-1984.html

The point of this essay (for me) can be summed up with a single sentence:
"What is above all needed is to let the meaning choose the word, and not the other way about. "

Orwell argues that "the other way about" hinders insight, since extant, popular metaphors/phrases will impose a structure onto the abstract that does or should not apply to the abstract concept at hand.

Other quips to pull out and use for guidance:
"A scrupulous writer, in every sentence that he writes, will ask himself at least four questions, thus: What am I trying to say? What words will express it? What image or idiom will make it clearer? Is this image fresh enough to have an effect? And he will probably ask himself two more: Could I put it more shortly? Have I said anything that is avoidably ugly? "
