It's startling but beautiful to realise that all characters and people have stories.

Unpopular opinion: I prefer this sequel to the original.
The characters are much more well rounded in this one; Ermengarde isn’t the ‘stupid, fat kid’ stereotype, she’s a loyal friend who has complex feelings and tries to do good on her word to Sara, she even gets a love interest;
Sara, on the other hand, has flaws, something she lacked in the original and seemed just a bit too perfect- she doesn’t take Ermengarde’s feelings into consideration a lot of the time, sending her books when she knows Ermie doesn’t like them;
Lavinia and Miss Minchin have character development, you take a peak at Miss Minchin’s past as her struggles as a woman in her time, Lavinia wants to go to university to escape from Miss Minchin’s School and studies diligently and is an intelligent young girl.
Oh and Becky is finally released from her ‘serving’ position under Sara as she goes on to marry a local boy, leaving Sara.

One of my favorite authors. I thought parts of this were weak... until I reread A Little Princess and remembered that they were actually good references to the book. :)

A little princess was one of the first books I ever read and one of my favorites. I was so excited for this sequel and it for sure lived up to my expectations I have read it over and over. I want to say I read it in 3rd or 4th grade but I am not quite sure.

a fairly good follow up to a little princess (though definitely not as good). i wouldn't have believed it possible for somebody to actually do this since it's pretty much impossible to top a little princess!

Sara Crewe--the authors' abridgment of The Little Princess--was one of my favorite books as a child. So it was a true pleasure to catch up with these characters and learn more about their pasts and dreams, a la McKay. She has managed to stay true to the original and still give their own, special spin. She excels at writing controlled chaos--very funny stuff. One of my recent favorites.
