‘Maybe you don’t get this because you haven’t experienced it, but imagine being a kid and being completely alone. There’s no one you can turn to, and showing any kind of emotion is a risk. Everything has to be kept in. There are secrets, taboos, and you can’t tell anybody. You have to keep the secrets. You’re trapped. You just can’t escape. Can you imagine what that’s like? It’s something that I can’t get over …’Â
Last Night in Nuuk is the debut novel by Niviaq Korneliussen, and a contemporary one that exudes youth. Set during spring in Greenland’s capital city and a night that changes so much. A cast of queer twenty-somethings each given their own turn at narration through parties, break-ups, sex, reckonings along with the past and future. It’s a very candid portrait of adulthood, taking swings while it’s at it. Like coming in after being out in the cold too long, parts of oneself aching or gone a bit numb but the feeling sorely returns. I wonder how much range of voice it has essentially being doubly translated, from the Danish version (from Greenlandic by the author) by Anna Halager. But pick up this book and let it flow and unfold for you. Â

The characters were all individual and each had their own struggles that were alluded to and became clearer as they took over the narrative. Of all the perspectives, I enjoyed the final perspective from Sara the most as it not only had the most conventional writing style, but her inner dialogue was so different to how she was viewed by the other characters.
Unfortunately the aforementioned writing style was an issue for me. A lot of murkiness and stream of consciousness that just wasn't my jam. The characters also acted quite illogically a lot of the time and were hard to get a handle on even within their own narratives.Â
Overall I enjoyed and appreciated this book but can't see myself remembering it much in the future.Â
