It was so easily readable, and I ran through the book so quickly. Each of the characters quickly pulled me in, and I was invested in their stories. However, it also kinda felt like an opening chapter to each of their stories. Like I want to know more. How it will continue. I want to explore their issues in greater depth. This really felt just too short and it just sort of skimmed the surface of it all.

‘Maybe you don’t get this because you haven’t experienced it, but imagine being a kid and being completely alone. There’s no one you can turn to, and showing any kind of emotion is a risk. Everything has to be kept in. There are secrets, taboos, and you can’t tell anybody. You have to keep the secrets. You’re trapped. You just can’t escape. Can you imagine what that’s like? It’s something that I can’t get over …’

Last Night in Nuuk is the debut novel by Niviaq Korneliussen, and a contemporary one that exudes youth. Set during spring in Greenland’s capital city and a night that changes so much. A cast of queer twenty-somethings each given their own turn at narration through parties, break-ups, sex, reckonings along with the past and future. It’s a very candid portrait of adulthood, taking swings while it’s at it. Like coming in after being out in the cold too long, parts of oneself aching or gone a bit numb but the feeling sorely returns. I wonder how much range of voice it has essentially being doubly translated, from the Danish version (from Greenlandic by the author) by Anna Halager. But pick up this book and let it flow and unfold for you.

I'm surprised how much I've enjoyed this book. It's very raw going in the naturalism vein of literature, sad-ish but hopeful-ish in places. The interconnected parts of the novel, each from a different point of view worked really well together and the story (as little as there is) flowed nicely.

Is this for everyone? No. But did I devoured it? Yes!
