Good quick read, and I was excited to read this as I loved the previous book in the series. I don’t know if it’s because King is a bit older, but the younger characters felt fairly poorly conceived. The women as well were fairly poorly developed. However the plot itself was great and quite engaging, I may read the sequel!

The King of villains strikes again. Excited to see what Ret. Det. Hodges, Jerome, and Holly are up to in the next installment and Holly's solo novel. Will Patton's narration is :chef's kiss:

**Spoilers below**

There's something slightly self-indulgent in writing about characters obsessed with a writer.
Everything about the rec center feels too lucky: That Morris finds the rec center as a haven as well, that Pete's mom still being conscious enough to notice where Pete went including that he took a key from the wall, that it was the only key missing and the key hook was labeled. Just all aligned a little too neatly.

I genuinely really liked Mr. Mercedes, but this book was a huge let down. King tries to repeat the structure of Mr. Mercedes, with the criminal and protagonists perspectives alternating, but it fails the bring the tension it did in the first book. Pete Saubers and his family are not very interesting characters, and the characters that we are already invested in are barely in the book. Morris is a much blander version of Brady and is too pathetic to provoke much terror. I’m hesitantly hopeful for End of Watch, assuming it follows the plot hook of Brady’s
possible telekinesis
.
