Okay, so I finally finished this one recently, and after a while of getting into it, it finally started to pick up the pace and became readable.

I really enjoyed the first book and was looking forward to reading the second, but had some trouble reading it and din't really get into it until about chapter 14.

The start of the story picks up around 2 months or so after the end of the first book, and stuff happened in those two months, the results of which were the common YA 2nd book in the series trope, that I just couldn't even deal with the first time I attempted to read it. (you know the one where the people trying to become a couple for the whole of the first book are inexplicably not on speaking terms/end the relationship etc. at the beginning of book 2 for the drama of getting back together over the 2nd book? That trope)

It happens so frequently now that I expect it, but I just kinda let a sigh when it happens and sometimes I have to put the book down for a bit, calm down, and then come back to it at a later time. That's what happened with this one.

So it was kinda slow reading for the first 13/14 chapters for me, but then it finally started to pick up and gain momentum around that point where Amani woke up inside the sultan's palace, with her former BFF, after having undergone an operation she did not consent to which ended up nullifying her powers and making her have to obey the sultan's commands. So yeah, it got really good at that point and I flew threw it.

I gave it 4 stars because though it was really good from the point I did get into it, I had to drag myself through the beginning. but overall the book was really good.

Bawling my eyes out throughout this book? More likely than you think.

The story was so intriguing though, such a good sequel

This book was definitely mediocre. I didn’t feel the same wow I did when reading the first one ): I like that it incorporated more fantasy elements and she has her powers but I also miss the smart ass gunslinger.

The beginning felt very slow and it took me quite a few tries to get into, but the last portion of the book I was flying through it!

I really enjoyed Amani and her slow and steady character development!
I love the complexity of the Sultan he makes for a good villain.

I did guess one of the plot twists but it was still very well done!

I’m excited to start book 3 soon and see where this rebellion finally ends and if they will succeed
