Content Warnings: Underage Drinking, Power Imbalance, Rape (some graphic, overall theme of the book), Victim-Blaming, Misogyny.

A heavy read, as is anything with a theme that doesn't really feel like it can be handled in less than 300 pages. There were parts of this book that had lovely prose, but when the overall theme of this book is how rape survivors are navigating, I find that I'm not too focused on the prose, but rather in wanting justice for these girls. Which means, unfortunately, that what would otherwise be perfectly acceptable background plot/relationships kind of felt in bad taste, all things considered although I do think the author made a very valid attempt to paint a real portrait here.
The book hurt, made me upset at, for and on behalf of the main character. But a lot of it was just that. Hurt. While I wholly *and I mean WHOLLY* respect someone trying to bring the reality of what victims and survivors go through, it just... didn't hit all the checks for me. I wanted justice, and I got something probably a little closer to reality. And that is a heartbreaking lesson to leave a book on.

Because of the heavy subjects discussed in this book, I wasn’t planning on reading it but I’m glad I changed my mind. I don’t know what to say except that this was so heart wrenching, beautiful and such an important read. The characters in this book felt so real and I loved their emotional authenticity. Usually when I read books narrated by first person, I’m always neutral about the character narrating it but God I loved Mara so much and I felt for her struggle.

also, on an unrelated note charlie and mara <333 are such a beautiful couple

This book... It means something to me. It means so much. It means everything.

It means something to every girl out there, living in this world.

I'm sad and happy and confused. I'm in love. I'll cherish this book. It is that important to me.
