I love this book so much. The mystery is interesting and there are some nice twists and turns. The character of Beatrice is a really nice one to have as a heroine, as we begin to see her go from being quiet and reserved to beginning to stand up for herself. Plus, the book is genuinely funny in parts. The author has a lovely turn of phrase - some of the lines in it made me giggle out loud.

I also love the romantic aspect to the story. It's less overt in this first book, because they've only just met, but their interactions are sparkling and entertaining to read. Kesgrave, like Beatrice, begins the story as one thing - a stuffy duke - but becomes something softer as the story goes on and Beatrice gets to know him.

Overall, the book is well-written, humorous, and easy to read, with engaging characters and a decently plotted mystery, and sets up the rest of the novels in the series perfectly.

Content Notes:
SpoilerMurder, violence, blood, death of a parent (in past).

I suppose it was meant to be daft, but I really couldn't cope when everyone (aside from Beatrice) seemed to think that the victim had killed himself by bashing his own head in with a candlestick. (Not really a spoiler as is in the first few chapters.) I mean no. Just no.
