The Fifth Witness by Michael Connelly

My airplane book. I would have asked the writer to remove much of the courtroom dialogue--it bogged the book down. It didn't become interesting until I was more than halfway through it. Though crime and law may function like this in the 'real' world, most readers read for pleasure, not to "relive" a lawyer's (or DA's) life.

Michael Connelly is one of my favorite thriller writers. He knows how to shape a story and when writing a twist at the end, he doesn't try to shock the reader so much as he tries to incorporate an element of reality into his writing. The Fifth Witness doesn't disappoint. Even though the client is unlikable, we're not rooting for her. We're rooting for Mickey to win his case and come out on top. Truly an enjoyable read.

I'll admit, I like them better with some Harry Bosch in them... That being said, a solid Connelly read. I enjoyed this one.

Audio version - as I listened to this I reflected on how it must feel for attorneys to read books about the court system and the professional aspects of their lives. I've never read a book about my career (orthodontist), but suspect I would find fault with the oversimplifications and errors if such a career were used in the plot.
