Look this book is very much of its time...it is hard to read with a 2020 lense. I couldn't really understand or appreciate the central romantic storyline between Meggie and Ralph because it does feel like an exercise in grooming and it genuinely seems to ruin Meggie's life, even though they don't become physical with one another until she is of age.
The best parts are all the descriptions of the Australian landscapes which are confronting and beautiful and haunting. The people are mostly tragic and struggle to express or accept love and that makes it hard work.
