What a sad news that the sequel might not happen.
Wow. I didnāt expect the ending and I wanna know what will happen to her. I really thought this is a stand-alone book and I just realized it on the last chapter and epilogue.

Wtaf did I just read??
Iām going to start with the good - it is not your typical ya and I really enjoyed the murder mystery part. And Akira was awesome at lawyering. The writing isnāt quite for me but itās beautifully done in places. I liked the inspirations and feel of the book.
However. So much stuff is thrown at you in the last 100 page or so. I didnāt feel into in throughout but I only felt that I wasnāt enjoying it from about half way through when it suddenly started being I do dump central. And the last quarter? WTAF?! I still donāt understand. Like I get certain bits - why a character we donāt see on page acts as he does (though I disagree), and the sub plot with the minister. But why does Lillian do what she does? That seems unnecessary. And why do the brothers hate each other? I need more please. And why did the eleven write the tenets and drive out their own kind????? And then the ending twist just makes SO LITTLE SENSE OMG.
ARGH. I actually wish I hadnāt finished this, Iād have enjoyed it more.

I had high expectations for this book and unfortunately I was a little disappointed. It wasnāt exactly bad, the story and the world itās set in are pretty good (the former is a little boring at times) but to be honest I really dislike the main character. And again, she is not badly written, she just annoys me. The rest of the characters are fine, not all of them as people but as written characters.
The biggest offences are thou, on one hand the pacing, things happen very quickly and many important stuff happens of page and we are told it happened because the main character (whose point of view we follow for like 90% of the book) is knocked out. She does have tendency to get herself into situations that will eventually end up in it.
On the other hand we have the intent on part of the author to redeem of the āOneā, I donāt mean for what he did long ago but what he did to Hesina. Because he wanted her to learn the lesson, how about you actually teach her when she was a kid and then explain the situation to her, like a responsible adult. In general the everyone in this book could work on their communications skills.
The thing I liked in this book though are the relationship between Mei and Sanjing and the romance between Akira and Hesina. Both were very well done.
And, even though the ending was very frustrating, a liked it in the end.

Uuuuuggggghhhhhhhhh.
This was probably one of the most boring books I've read in my entire life. I was expecting magic! and intrigue! and action! but only got Princess Hesina moping around the palace (with a little bit of stabbing mixed in). It nearly put me to sleep several times and I'm actually very shocked I finished it! The plot was a chore to keep track of and was mostly betrayal after betrayal without making sense. None of the characters really had any personality, and the romance was bland. How did this get published?!
