Although this book isn't more than 203pages.. After each chapter I felt like A LOT happened. And they did.
I love how C.S Lewis wrote this book, how the author spoke to the reader. It was all a great joy :)

2 ⭐️ one for nature writing and one for childhood nostalgia. I thought I’d read a cozy christmassy read with some childhood nostalgia, but instead I got ultra-christian propoganda packaged as a children’s novel. This book perpetuates sexism, racism, classism and ableism all in the most subtle ways to imprint these ideologies on children. I felt vehemently uncomfortable reading some parts and am reluctant to pick up his next works. Props to the book club for analysing this book alongside me and validating me in my rage.

Read with Isabel. I missed a chapter or two on nights Mark did bedtime.

Anyone wondering if this book stands the test of time and whether or not they should read it with their kids? Big fat no.

Two reasons: there’s something about Lewis’s writing style that does not read aloud easily, sentence constructions that don’t flow easily. Yes, it’s an older style, but we read the Wizard of Oz before this and I didn’t have a problem with it.

Secondly, and more importantly, there’s more than one expression of gender roles that I do not agree with and don’t want my children exposed to. Twice I had to stop reading, explain to Isabel why this particular part is problematic, and skip through to another section. It’s blatant and it’s gross and being a product of another time is no reason to expose our kids to harmful ideologies.

Will not be reading any more CS Lewis with my kids.

Moves a lot faster than I remember (and it moves a lot faster than the movie).
