For the most part I enjoyed this novel. I thought the plot was super interesting and it held my attention most of the time. Most of the character work was very well done and they seemed well developed. The descriptions of the world were very effective, bringing both the beauty and ugliness of India to vivid life.

I really enjoyed some of the story lines in this novel, and I disliked others. I was really disappointed with the female perspective we're subjected to for almost 200 pages. It's like willful ignorance plus bitchiness is supposed to equal interesting. But it didn't make her interesting to read about, just incredibly annoying. I truly hated being in this character's head.

I also thought there were some pacing issues. Again, I first noticed the problem during Neda's chapters. We already saw many of the scenes described here just a few chapters before. I didn't need to read them again; it was too repetitive. I think the pacing would've been better if the story line was told once and we received both Ajay and Neda's perspectives interspersed with each other. There was another section where the pacing slowed way down. With about 100 pages left we are suddenly introduced to a new character who has a 30-page monologue detailing his life story. This was so boring I almost DNF'd after mostly enjoying the book before that.

Overall, pretty good. I disagree with some of the choices the author made but an entertaining time.
