This was a good book. It captured a flavor for Sherman's March that I'd never read before - that of the hanger's on and those ancillary to the military divisions. It was a story of the doctors, nurses, freed slaves, deserters, and the newly homeless, or hopeless. It wasn't a great work of literary prowess, but it was an enjoyable read; engaging and paced like a page-turner.

very good story - Gone with the Wind era... good characters, good scenarios... captures the innocence that we are inside - even when we are behaving bravely - or in an evil way... this one will stay with me a while -

I read Doctorow's "Ragtime" over ten years ago and enjoyed it. I was looking forward to reading "The March" when I read a few reviews. I was delighted to find it at a used book store recently. I really liked it. The plot moves quickly and there are many characters, from freed slaves to soldiers from both armies, to show the March from several different view points. It is very comprehensive as well as entertaining.

I found it difficult to follow any of the characters or places. He wrote as if I was already familiar with them.
