book was tense and held my attention, but the final third was beyond predictable, and honestly lazy. john marrs could have done something unique if he
could have actually committed to the premise he set up
, but i guess i shouldn’t be surprised. was also deeply disappointed in
the way the only explicit characters of colour all met tragic demises, which were never questioned by the characters. no mention of the obvious islamophobia that led to the first “chosen” death, and the most tragic character was given the most horrendous death which was immediately swept under the rug and promptly ignored for the rest of the book. libby was supposed to have been chose because she’d see the equal value of all life, but even during the final confrontation she doesn’t even think to accuse jude/whoever of the blatant racism his killing exhibited
. honestly, was very excited to read and finish this, but it left me feeling disappointed

Interesting plot and characters, as well as unexpected plot twists, but I felt it went on longer than needed.

The Passengers was a great deep dive into surveillance, survival, privacy, rebellion, change vs tradition, groupthink, mob mentality, capitalism, artificial intelligence and and much, much more. Despite my interest in tech thriller/horror content, this was my first experience with reading a modern day dystopian focused entirely around our technological advancement. It's far too close for comfort but that dose of realism made it much more terrifying.  The social media aspect to this story was awfully true to life. The general public are so far removed from the matter in question that they become desensitised to the trauma they are witnessing. I could see this genuinely happening in modern day society. Don’t let the length of this book deter you from picking it up as it was engaging and fast-paced throughout. I thoroughly recommend if the themes I mentioned interest you and you enjoy sci-fi literature.
