I’m still entirely too entertained by the amount of puns and literary humor in this series, but also, wow that got dark.

I think this is my favorite book of the series. I love the story, althoughbInverynmuch missed the presence of Bastille. It also feels the most real and honest that we get from Alcatraz. High marks!

Love it. Not much else to say that I haven’t said for the first four books in the series.

My daughter read these and I am beyond happy that she is enjoying one of my favorite authors. These are great books for middle grade (4-6 grade) but can be enjoyed in a weekend by any fan of fantasy.

These books are hilarious.

All that said, this one does take a darker turn at the end, compared to the first four books.

The ending was strange and the book didn't move quite as well as others in the series. Still, a great series for read-aloud with our elementary aged boys.

I might raise the rating on this book later, but right now, I just hate the author badly enough for some of the writing techniques he employed in this book, that when I was finished reading, I was annoyed, which made it so I couldn't say I enjoyed the book, therefore the one star rating. I'll read the next book when it comes out, but I'm not nearly as enamored with the idea as I was.

Alcatraz is one of the best narrators ever, and I'm sad that he doesn't narrate the last book. Still, I remember being so surprised by the reveal at the end the first time I read it, and even though I knew what was coming, it was still a delight to read!
