Couldn't get into it, and after hearing so many bad reviews, I didn't feel the need to continue

For what was suppose to be an adult fantasy the writing was very YA. A lot of the time I felt I was being narrated at rather than being brought along with the story in a more natural way. Like the book version of “telling not showing”.
The pacing also felt off. Somehow the plot moved too fast and too slow. Side characters kept getting introduced and then immediately disappearing with a scene change.
There was meant to be a love triangle but that also felt pointless due to the whole fated mates angle.
I didn't feel really connected to, or invested in, any of the main characters by almost 50% in.
The only saving grace was the magic system and mythology was interesting but it also felt like too much of the mythology got thrown at the reader (like too many mythical creatures for example). I think less could have been used for a greater impact. It just felt a bit cluttered.
Would give this book 1.25⭐️ for how much I managed to get through before giving up.

Thank you to NetGalley and Avon and Harper Voyager, Harper Voyager for an eARC of Forged by Blood!
Incredible word building, Nigerian mythology, and unique magic system! Ehigbor Okuson stuns in her new debut novel! The writing is well-paced and easy to follow, but I would label this more as Upper YA borderline New Adult. There is an amount of violence in the book where I would not totally label it as YA. The characters really grow into themselves as the book progresses and I was really invested in them! High stakes with a dash of romance- this book is one to watch out for come release day!
