This is the third Keigo Higashino book I’ve read, and once again, he managed to surprise me with his unique approach to storytelling. Every book of his feels fresh, and Malice is no exception. This time, the narrative structure is different, alternating between first-person perspectives from Detective Kaga and Nonoguchi. This allows readers to see the case from both sides, while trying to figure out which version of the story is true. My emotions and perceptions kept shifting depending on whose point of view I was following.
Unlike many murder mysteries, this novel doesn’t focus on “whodunit,” but instead, we’re asked to solve the motive behind the crime. As always, Higashino delivers some unexpected plot twists, and even by the final pages, I was still taken aback by the revelations. It’s easy to see why so many people call this book a page-turner.
That said, in my personal opinion, these same strengths also reveal some weaknesses. Since the killer is revealed early on, the story lacks a bit of suspense and tension in the middle. The pacing slows down, and I found the motive somewhat predictable, which left me feeling a bit bored at times.
Detective Kaga, though, is the true definition of a great detective. I love his methodical approach—he’s critical, observant, and doesn’t easily buy into what the killer claims. His calmness during interrogations and decision-making stood out to me.
However, aside from Kaga, no other characters really stood out for me. Perhaps because the focus was so tightly on two main characters, the relationships between them and the other supporting characters felt underdeveloped. In contrast to Higashino's Detective Galileo series, where there’s some humor and lively banter between Yukawa and Kusanagi, here Kaga is focused on solving the case. While not a major flaw, I think exploring Kaga’s personality a bit more could have made things even more engaging.
All in all, Malice is still a must-read for anyone looking to dive into Keigo Higashino’s work, especially for fans of psychological mysteries and shocking plot twists. While the pacing and shifting perspectives might not suit everyone, the story is still satisfying and worth picking up.

This book sucks you and doesn't let up until the end. You think that you have everything figured out and then the story twists again. This story is as much of a why-done-it as a who-done-it.

This novel presents you with all the facts and invites you to solve the mystery. The question is, can you solve it or are you emotional attach to the characters?

Messes with your head
Keigo Higashino does it again. Another unique crime mystery that keeps you hooked. Not just hooked but plays with your mind as a reader, making your mind make assumptions and diverting it without you even realizing. And ironically that’s the central theme of the story too. It was a fun ride, this one.

I had such a good time reading this. At one point I thought, "everything has been wrapped up, why are there so many more pages?" Twists and turns!
