Ermm it’s an okay book for me. Will not recommend anyone who is going through/ have a child with terminal illness. It’s depressing.

A heart warming but also crushing story of how the author went to Haiti after the earthquake and experienced a life changing moment. In the process of volunteering to help rebuild the community, he took over a local orphanage and met a young girl named Chika who won his heart in more ways than one. Then a few years later he brings her to America to live with his wife due to an unknown mass in her brain that can't be treated in Haiti. This is the story and journey that 'Mister Mitch" experiences with his wife as they tried to keep this little bundle of joy on the planet while she fought for her life against DIPG.

With such a powerful message and with so many emotions, the reader is taken through the journey that explains the struggles but also positive experiences of raising child that is not your own but has become a part of your family while also sharing the struggles of having a family member be diagnosed with a terminal medical condition. The memories the author was so kindly willing the share with the reader are beautiful in so many way from including pictures in the physical editions and including audio recordings in the audiobooks. It made for such a personal experience that I truly appreciated. I loved every minute of this and wanted to continue reading even though I knew the outcome already. I was painful but in a way that makes you stronger by walking in the shoes of someone else. I appreciated everything about this and am happy to say that he continues to be one of my favorite authors whether he's writing fiction or nonfiction.

Celebrating the short life of one little girl. Have your tissues ready. Great as an audio book - read by the author and including brief recordings of Chika's voice.

A tender reminder to hold your children close and cherish them while you have them. I recommend the audiobook version! The author includes audio files that aren't in the print version.

The journalist/author and his wife take over the operation of a Haitian orphanage. A little girl who ends up there develops a brain cancer, so they take her into their home and their hearts. He's a good writer, so the story is heartwarming and sad. But knowing others who volunteer at orphanages in Haiti, I know there are many children in need of help, and he doesn't really highlight that. My mom liked this, I think in part because of the strong Christian orientation. The audio book includes recordings of Chika.
