I think this was my first YA thriller. It was different than I expected, more romance than I thought, but still entertaining enough!

cute and times and gruesome at times, don’t listen if people tell you it’s not scary but still read it

"...why discussing a tragedy—consuming every single story about it—was often comforting. Was it because tragedies manifested a sense of community? Here we are, all going through this terrible thing together. Or were tragedies addictive, and the small pleasures that came from them the signal of a deeper problem?"

Probably the only thing I like about this book is Perkins' fluent prose, and well, that opening chapter. Everything else just plummets down the cliff of my "regrettable reads". This book was pegged to be reminiscent of the teenage horror flick "Scream", and while I have only watched a few clips from that movie it's pretty obvious that this book is far more laughable than the former.

Perkins injected a lot of diverse representatives in her book which was commendable but the characters seem to be just there for the ornamentation or some kind of relief. What's more frustrating is how the killer was introduced so early on, this made the suspenseful thrill that I usually invest my time on such a book to be snuffed out so quickly. Of course, let's not forget the unnecessary romantic subplot (c'mon guys, try to tone down your lustful cravings for a bit please?), that superficial "reveal" of Makani's "dark" past, and that stupid reason why the killer did the murders.

I am quite disappointed with Perkins' right now and I guess it would have been far better if she just stuck with YA Contemporary. *sighs*

While the book had a different twist that I could appreciate, and I love that Ollie was a bit more goth/alternative in the book, this is one of those rare instances where I actually liked the movie better (on Netflix now), and the movie wasn’t all that great, either. I wish there was a way to mash the two together, and maybe that would be something great.

But seriously…the Makani twist in this book was just…lame.

Oooohhh, this book was not good. I at least got through the book because I was intrigued as to what was in store for the ending, but I was sadly disappointed. This book was very underwhelming. The characters were boring, the plot was dull, and the killer was unrealistic. I wanted to like this book (only because the cover was pretty)...oops.

What really got me was the part about her high school swim team hazing... as a former swimmer and current swim coach, this hazing situation the main character goes through is ridiculous! It was so over the top, didn't make a lick of sense, and was just so bad. After I read this, I don't know why I continued. It was dumb.

I only give 1 ratings to books I DNF or one's that are truly just complete garbage and this one was close. Though I like the author and her writing style was nice, I just couldn't take this story seriously.

SPOILERS/SHITTY REVIEW

It’s a brutal book. Haley dies in the first chapter and it amazes me. Makani is a decent character with interesting friends Darby and Alex (R.I.P). The bathroom scene with Matt was actually scary and gave me nightmares. Chris was an amazing parent figure to the best character in the book, Ollie. Like cone on who runs at a serial killer naked? I loved the descriptions of the school and Ollie’s house. Rodrigos death scene was creepy too same with Caleb’s. Makani’s scene being attacked was super captivating and this whole novel literally set me sitting on the edge of my seat. Grandma young was an interesting character who I enjoyed the presence of. Makani’s past beach incident was a tad confusing and hard to read as it was so wrong. Katie probably had the saddest death. Rosemarie put up a really good fight but it was somewhat sad when Alex died. The whole corn maze chase secene was so well done.
I really loved this book so 5 stars.
