(A sort of 3-3.5 stars, I think?) This is a weird one, one I can't sort out my feelings about. Polly and Tom's relationship made me uncomfortable -- not initially, but still fairly early on. I wish I'd been able to read this with Spoils; if nothing else, it might have helped me figure out what exactly I think about it.

Two stars only for being compelling. No more than two stars for being Lolita and pretending to be East of the Sun, West of the Moon; and for that matter for using East of the Sun, West of the Moon in such a manner. Ew. And no, I don't like Polly. Or Tom.

This book was well written but I found the romance creepy. I won't spoil it if that's your cup of tea. I love her other books.

By all accounts I should love this book--with it's many allusions and slowly unfolding supernatural mystery--but it just didn't land for me. I found the pacing very slow for the first three quarters of the book; I found much of Polly and Tom's imaginings boring, and would often scan pages just to get to the next real-life or supernatural event.

And of course, there's the "creep factor" (as another reviewer put it). Tom and Polly's friendship begins innocently enough, but as Polly grows the story seems to gesture toward a burgeoning romantic relationship between the two of them. In the end,
Spoilerthey both seem to have romantic feelings for each other. They met when she was TEN.
