I love fiction written by poets. There is a certain rhythm in the prose that captivates and this story of a young girl embarking on the vast ocean in search of her father certainly did.
With a speaking cat as her guide, Aisha steps on a ship made of bones and makes the acquaintance of other creatures who reside in the deep dark and who have a distrust for men who want to conquer every new ... they 'discover'.
The prose is lyrical and poignant in depicting how a daughter's love and loyalty to her father can arouse an inner bravery even in the face of large fears and the unknown. The manifestation of desires, of what keeps calling us far beyond home and family was ingeniously done and further immersed in this world.
The backdrop of familial structure and dynamics, culture, religion, and tradition added another layer of complexity to this very engaging and unique read.
