Seriously, I did not expect to be this invested in this storyline.

Even though some characters do not add a lot to the plot, the whimsy and lunacy is still strong with this volume. Plus it is starts one of my favourite storylines in the East Blue Sega.

  • One thing I'm sad they skipped out on in the Netflix show is Buggy's flashback!! I'm so glad that I got to see it here because I love that he knew Shanks back in his apprentice days and that they used to be friends. Of course, there's the whole devil fruit incident that Buggy blames Shanks for but there seems to be even more hurt lingering in their past. I'm always here for these kinds of dynamics and I wish we had gotten even more information!!
  • By now we've also seen Buggy use his devil fruit powers, the second use next to Luffy that we've met! But with the help of Zoro, Luffy takes a stand and vows to defeat Buggy to save the residents of Orange Town!

This volume introduces another important One Piece character and we get some of his backstory. I appreciate that even this early in the series, Oda has already dropped in character moments and pieces that he is calling back to. This leads me to believe that Oda is creating a lot of set-up that will pay off throughout the series. It's honestly hard to put down this series because it is so easy to read and its characters are easy to root for. Thankful to have so much of it to read.
