past me thought i was just going to read a fun, action-packed YA thriller... little did i know i was going to get my heart ripped out of my chest. seriously, the last 100 pages of this book were so gripping and emotional for me in a way i was not expecting.

admittedly, the plot was a little slow to begin with and i found some moments overly descriptive but this was easily forgiven for how good it got in the second half. i also predicted a lot of the plot twists but i didn't mind bc this is a thriller more than a mystery & it definitely served its purpose of being thrilling. holly jackson is also so good at revealing things that i still get shocked even if the reveal is something i already guessed. the commentary on "red feelings" was also very touching and something i will probably think about for a very long time.

disclaimer: I don’t really give starred reviews because I don’t like leaving them. I enjoy most books for what they are, & I extract lessons from them all. Everyone’s reading experiences are subjective, so I hope my reviews provide enough information to let you know if a book is for you or not. I listened to the audiobook of this, and I don't know that I recommend that format. The narrator was okay, but some parts were a bit corny for me to hear. I think maybe I would have liked this better if I read the ebook. Regardless, I listened to this entire book at 2.5x speed in a few hours while I ran errands as my dog got his haircut hahaha. I had a great time looking concerned and nervous in public as I listened to this twisty & turny young adult thriller!

I did not predict the motivations of the person who was stalking this group of six kids in their RV, I didn't predict the backstory of Red's mom, and I did not predict the subplot of the romance! I don't want to ive anything away, but the only part that did feel predictable involved when the six teens almost got help/reprieve. That's all I'll say!

Overall, I was surprised, saddened, and will continue to read whatever Holly writes! I can't wait for the tv adaptation of AGGGTM (still my favorite books from her)!

cw: gun violence, death of a parent, murder, grief, extortion, child death
