Crane husband is a story about how unsustainable it is to be a crane wife; to keep weaving a life out shreds of one’s own skin and living on “love” alone, to needing less so that others can forcibly take more. To me, it was an incredibly sad read, especially for our young narrator. Kelly Barnhill just has a way with words and magical realism.

I didn't enjoy it. I think it lacked nuance for the themes it tackles, or perhaps, we were given the wrong pov and no insight into her mother's mind at all. The ending is far too abrupt and we're left wondering about Michael.
