Nine Moons is a pregnancy memoir, one that isn’t saccharine sweet but rather honest and unflinching, warts and all, full of mixed emotions, contradictory thoughts, good and bad experiences. It’s written by a Peruvian journalist, resident in Spain at the time of her pregnancy. Some of it is obviously country specific but much will be familiar to pregnant people and prospective parents everywhere. There’s humour, but also pathos, and a real mix of topics is explored, some expected and others less so - sonograms, the difficulties of choosing a baby name, complicated mother-daughter relationships, list during pregnancy, and pornography featuring pregnant women. Not one I’d recommend to every pregnant person, but perfect for those looking for a less conventional and stereotypical approach to impending parenthood.Â
