these toxic authority figures angered me to no end but it’s okay because the two seconds viola and todd were together made up for all of it. i’m so incredibly excited to read the third book and see how this world and this story will finally be concluded

While a different kinda beast of a story from the first book, this one really delves into the monstrous nature of tyranny, oppression and mass control, and Mayor Prentiss is certainly more interestingly terrifying and sinister in 'Ask' than in 'Knife' precisely because he's always about 5 steps ahead of Todd no matter what the situation, practically living in Todd's head 24/7. Because of this, he seems to know all and his ability to manipulate is god-level. That alone was both maddeningly frustrating and nail-bitingly exciting, building the plot up to a chaotic crescendo, where I constantly feared for the lives of the two heroes.

Todd and Viola go through so much in this book, I hope they get some peace by the end of the trilogy.

These books are slow but so creative and interesting. I don't love it but I also don't hate it? I keep coming back for more to see how Todd and Viola deal with their incredibly violent and slightly insane situation while remaining true to their morals.

As many people have already said, THIS is how you write the second book in a trilogy.

What I especially liked about this book is how it made a lot of really important points about things like war, gender bias and racism, but never hit you over the head with it. Great writing with a nuanced story.
