This spooky, gothic huntress tale pulled my corpse out of my latest reading slump so fast. Easy 5 stars. I am foaming at the mouth for the next book to come out.

The magic system seems pretty cool. It doesn’t get fully explained until further into the book but it was nice not to be “told” exactly what it was. Keeping track of all the different Cards and their magic was hard though. And I still don’t quite understand what the Spirit of the Wood wants.
The writing is very good - it didn’t feel like bad fanfiction. You could see a majority of the plot twists coming from a mile away but they were still enjoyable which is the most important thing.
Moving onto characters:
- Seeing the subtext about how head over heels Ravyn is for Elspeth is so cute
- the Nightmare seems like an interesting character and I can’t wait to see more of him in the second book. I loved the growing relationship between Elspeth and the Nightmare. You can tell she doesn’t want him there but also he’s become a comfort to her. And he is always in her corner. He might not tell her everything but he is on her side.
The major characters all seem fleshed out. There are a few that fall to the side but we’ll probably see more of them in the second book.

The book gave off lots of autum/dark woods/lingering unease vibes and I loved it. It would be a perfect read for late Autumn.

The book was fairly slow paced for a majority of the time. But they had to set the stage of what was happening to Blunder, to Emory, to Elspeth and how they were trying to fix it. I’d rather it be slow than rushed.
