The representation on this series is fantastic, and the characters are fun and interesting.
I do wish the overall plot had moved a bit faster, and that the MC had more autonomy to move the plot and take action.

This books series almost bums me out because it has the potential to be reaallllyyy good but like sooo many editing and writing errors among the 3 books out and like it just feels like a first draft among all the books. It’s such a cool idea and I like the queer and diverse characters. I would love for each one of these books to be returned to by the author and just redone. Specifically the third it just really went in random directions losing a plot line.

These books are the perfect lighthearted low quality books I need every now and then. The writing is mediocre and sometimes confusing and the plot is very predictable, but I still enjoy reading them. This was probably still my least favorite in the series just because I’m not a fan of the jealous best friend of the chosen one trope. But hey, a fun read’s a fun read.

Book 3 done, with the first non-powered pov character. A step up imo from the last book, it really picked up the pace. A lot more focused on the relationships between the characters and groups. Now I gotta wait til next year for the final? book ☹️

This series is such a joy to read, truly the epitome of a mood booster.

I absolutely loved reading from Emma's perspective. She's a somewhat anxious perfectionist with a heart of gold who just wants to do right by the ones she cares for (which is pretty much anyone who's been wronged.) However, with the stakes being so high, this care and loyalty leads to her putting a huge amount of pressure on herself to get things 'right' and prove herself to be worthy of helping, even without powers. I absolutely loved this part of her character and the growth that came alongside it. I also adored following her journey when it came to questioning her sexuality and exploring her aro-ace identity. It was written in a sensitive, honest way and the conversations she had with herself and others on the topic were wonderful.

As I've come to expect from this series, the discussions and exploration surrounding socio-political issues were superb. It's critical and honest and pretty terrifying at times in the ways it mirrors issues in our own society. The character, as always, were also wonderful. We got to see a lot of Bells (who is an absolute gem of a human) but we not too much of Abby & Jess in this book but from what we did see has me incredibly intrigued to see how Abby's character is going to grow and where the story will take the squad.

With a fast paced, addictive and aware plot and a cast of characters you want to both fight alongside and wrap in bubble wrap, it's impossible to read this series without feeling that little bit better and I can't wait to get book four in my hands.

This was cute. I enjoyed the characters, but it moved a lot slower than the first two. It did feel like filler, and I wound up wanting to know more about the other characters and what was up with them.

I don't want to be disrespectful regarding Emma's journey to identifying as asexual - it was just a long, slow inner journey that was solved as soon as she started talking, because she's surrounded by people who love her. People relate to that and say it's realistic, and it's certainly worthwhile (and better than the alternative, tbh), so I don't really want to criticize it, but it felt loooong. Pair that with Emma being stuck in a cycle where she gets sidelined and mad about it, and it felt like I was stuck for most of the book. I think exploration of some of her other traits and perfectionism would have filled her out more, maybe balanced things out a bit somehow. But I'm glad people have this book and I'm looking forward to the next one.

Just not working for me. Turns out I'm mad enough at [b:Not Your Villain|35018774|Not Your Villain (Sidekick Squad, #2)|C.B. Lee|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1493583323l/35018774._SY75_.jpg|52844898] that I'm done. Oh well.

I'm sitting here and thinking: do I want to go personal in this review?

The answer is no.

But I'm just going to say this book means a lot to me and I did cry. The conversation between Emma and Sean is excellent and is, in fact, the reason I cried.

Representation is important, y'all
