"I've come to believe that how we choose to live with pain, or injustice, or death is the true measure of the divine within us. Some choose to do harm to themselves and others. Others bear up under their pain and help others bear it."

You can feel how much heart and soul Brennert put into his research and this story.

I think the writing, the plot and the portrayal of lives 'separated', is well done in this book, though grievous for all to endure.
Well worth the time to understand the plight of those diagnosed with Hansen's disease, early on before it was understood more. Do we always fear the unknown, and not understood? I suppose so.

There is some what I will call 'factual sex' about mid-way through the book, which you can skim now that you are alerted.
