In this short text, Heschel provides an excellent framework for understanding Shabbat and its significance. The Sabbath: Its Meaning for Modern Man was easy to read and contains insights useful for Jews of all denominations and levels of practice. Much more accessible and enjoyable than Heschel's [b:God in Search of Man: A Philosophy of Judaism|533868|God in Search of Man A Philosophy of Judaism|Abraham Joshua Heschel|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1316638623l/533868._SX50_.jpg|4217], which I read earlier this year, even though I gave both books a 4-star rating.

I read this book because of one amazing quote I heard (which was stated to be from this book), and then I never stumbled upon that quote... so that was disappointing.

I thought there were some good anecdotes in this book and I think I'll definitely have to read it again for some of the things to sink in. It's definitely not a "light" read, and at many points felt over my head. At other times though, I thought it had a lot of good things to say.

book worthy of a space in space, and to think of during the pure joy of time

Beautiful. Dense. Feel like I will need to re-read often. I loved the philosophical approach, and will be marinating on the ways he describes time vs. space. The liturgical stories grabbed me less. Beautiful, deep read.

i think that this book made some very good points at the beginning. although, it began to get repetitive after the half way mark, it was overall inoffensive. i liked the stories about different rabbis throughout history and wished that there was more of them. 3.5
