I don't really like where the plot was going in the second half of the book. I feel like
after L's death, most of the tension is gone

L dying!!!! Not a fan of that! And not a fan of the new characters brought in to replace him. Also is Light smart or is everyone around him just not smart at all. I mean Misa one of very few women in this book is so not smart and I get that he wouldn't want someone smart as the other person with a Death Note as he wants to be able to control them but not a fan of the second half of this book and made me realise a lot of things I'm not loving about it. However I've enjoyed it to this point and I'm hoping it picks back up in the next one ... I'm really just hoping L comes back but I'm delusional soooo

Volume 7 was probably the best so far. It was action packed and too good.
However volume 8 was not that great and it is probably my least favorite volume so far. I wasn't too impressed with the new characters and storyline.
Now onto the next book.

Things are picking up again after vol. 3 where it felt like everything had slowed to almost a complete halt. Again, I feel like sometimes this series really gets too bogged down in the specific details and the intricacies of Light's and now Mello and Near's thought processes.

I accidentally spoiled myself to L's fate, so I wasn't super surprised when he died, but it was still sad. He was hands down my favorite character.

I realized, while reading this and being completely bummed about how much of a ditz Misa is - an issue I have with this series is that I really feel like Light isn't that intelligent - everyone around him is just pretty dumbed down. L's intelligence was heavily conveyed in his abilities to think several steps ahead and predict what Light was going to do before he even knew in some situations. He only lost because he was learning about a rule set for the Death Note that Light already knew about because Ryuk was helping him. Even Rem was able to predict Light's actions to an extent.

When it comes to Misa's manipulation, it's depressing to watch because I don't feel sorry for her because she's such a non character? There's only like half a brain cell there so I really don't exactly know the purpose of her character. She's like a tool for Light to use. Sayu is a prop. Light's mother is forgettable. So, again, the only female characters that got to show any hint of intelligence or existed as the tiniest bit of a foil to light was that FBI agent's fiance and Rem. It's sad.

Anyway, I'm curious how the series will end but I'm going to read a few other things between this and the next volume.

I wavered on a 2 star for this edition of Death Note but the first volume (7) of the book saves it. A clever (as always) plot leading up to some shock events although the death of a certain someone is flat footed and could have been so much more than it was. Even the shock factor of it wasn’t as it could have been. Volume 8 was convoluted and just a bit crap to be honest. Two new characters who look like woman and I think should have been, but in typical anime fashion, they’re men and the one main female character is further reduced to being a shell of a human, willing to trade everything for a man (who’s become yet more of a dick). Have the next two editions to read but hoping they pick up a bit from that last volume.
