I loved the biological insights of this book. Creatures and beings and breeding and not breeding is Wild. The embrace of the queerness of nature then the return to gender tropes - while obviously comedic felt forced or rather 'of its time' . Maybe it's my personal preference for sex positive agony aunts but otherwise I deeply recommend it as a journey into the tantalising wilderness of global reproduction.

For anyone who's ever wondered about the sexual habits of honeybees, hyenas, slime molds, rotifers, and all other manner of creatures great and small, this is the book for you. Using the guise of breezy sex columnist Dr. Tatiana Judson explores the many forms of reproduction practiced by a wide variety of organisms. Along the way she introduces major tenets of evolutionary biology and suggests evolutionary explanations for seemingly bizarre sexual practices. This is not a book for creationists; Judson firmly believes in evolution and is able to explain almost anything through an evolutionary lens. She provides copious end notes to back up all her assertions, and has sterling academic credentials from Stanford and Oxford. This is science writing at its best, thoroughly researched, educational, well-written and highly entertaining. And considering every chapter is about sex, it might even get apathetic teenagers interested.

A funny read, an evolutionary biologist posing as a relationship advice columnist, Judson digs into some of the strangest parts and examples in the biology of sex with wit and amazing detail.

Realistically this is a 4 or maybe even 5 star book (if you particularly liked the agony aunt style chapter setup). I only give this book 3 stars as I have come across much of this information before. For those that have no prior knowledge of the subject this is a great book; overflowing with case studies, highly referenced and comprehensive. I'm still not sure the narrative works but kudos to the author for trying something a little different. In short, read it.

What a fun book. At least one chapter is now out of date, but it was published in 2002 and it's about science, so that makes sense. So much wonder and variation in the sex lives of the animals of the planet and Olivia Judson is truly thrilled by it all, which comes through loud and clear in her writing.

Loved this

Such a unique and engaging way to learn about such a specific yet universal scientific topic. This book had me questioning so many assumptions about universality of behaviors and functions between species.
