DNF. 22%. It's fine, it's readable and I could've finished it if I'd cared to but there are just way too many characters to follow and the dialogue feels like a high school play where people just yell melodramatic stuff at each other.

There are times in this book, though extremely well written, where you get the feeling you are watching Girls. John dos Passos is a little more critical of the situation though.

I admit I did not read it till the end. It is too chaotic and hectic for me. There's a certain degree of chaos that I like, however this is not the type. Good idea but poorly executed (is there a term "overmodern"?). Even I could not keep track of what exactly was happening to whom. Too segmented, the passion is missing. Maybe some day I will read the other 100 pages I leave untouched for the moment.

As important a modern novel as Ulysses. Lyrically beautiful, stylistically accomplished.

I get what Dos Passos is doing in this novel and I get why it's important and I'm glad he wrote it. I'm just not that glad I read it.
