once I got past the disappointment that it wasn't at all a horror novel, it was quite ok
I just didn't get quite as invested in the story or characters as I would've liked, considering that the setting was original and fun

I’m being incredibly unfair to this debut novel because I read Milman’s second and thousand times superior, fast paced thriller, before this one. If I’d read this one first I may have liked it more, which isn’t to say this wasn’t good, it’s just not Swipe Right for Murder. Having said that, it’s well worth reading.

An homage to campy, yet effectively freaky B-horror flicks. This played on a huge range of emotions from melancholy to hilarious, quite possibly sometimes too campy? Dario, named after the famous Italian filmmaker, is finishing his final year of HS and his last year at his home. He’d emancipated himself as a young teen after almost dying and no one seemingly caring. Only, he’s called back to his birth home for a live funeral for his aging father. His birth home being a castle as well as Moldavia Film Studio. Each wing of the castle is named after horror luminaries. Crew also live there. It’s an institution.

And in his father’s will, he’s tapped as head of his family’s horror film studio or it’s sold to a terrible other film studio. So, he’s pulled back into Moldavia’s orbit. To the castle, the memories, his much older brother and his crush. Not to mention having no idea how to bring the studio back to solvency.

Much of the book is Dario finding peace with his childhood and his brother. Which is not an easy thing. But, the ending was perfect.

Scream All Night is perfect for fans of [a:Andrew Smith|26810|Andrew Smith|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png] or [b:The Great American Whatever|25663382|The Great American Whatever|Tim Federle|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1433439493s/25663382.jpg|45486309], as it’s a unique, heartfelt, and cinematic novel. Witness the sights and sounds of Dario Heyward, a happy teenager forced to relive his traumatic childhood in an insanely spooky movie studio, and prepare to scream all night at the horrific tragedy of an unraveling family left to rot in Moldavia, a castle with far too many skeletons in its closet… Rating: five flower spiders/five

you know those books that you read, and then when you're done you just put the book down for a little while and stare off into space because you can't really process rational thought that doesn't involve that book?

yeah, this is one of those.

I found Scream All Night during a library haul a while back and fell in love instantly. A few months later, I was lucky enough to be able to purchase it for myself (thanks, Book Soup!) and since Halloween was approaching at that point, I figured I'd re-read it. Somehow, I think it got even better, if that's possible.

Scream All Night manages to tackle some pretty intense themes (such as abuse and mental illness) without losing a spark of wicked humor. It's intimately witty in a way that feels almost like talking to a close friend. I am a trope aficionado, especially those of the horror/fantasy kind, and this book touches on SO MANY tropes, it's amazing. I mean, it is set in a movie studio. Oh, yeah, this book is set in a MOVIE STUDIO.

The characters. I LOVED them. I've got a special soft spot for Oren, though, for reasons unknown. He's just so ridiculous and all-over-the-place that he somehow manages to hit every single one of my favorite character tropes. Mad love for the whole cast, though. You really get a sense of everyone's personal journeys throughout the book and their paths to overcoming them, which is really difficult to portray in a stand-alone novel.

In conclusion, wow, wow, WOW. This book's truly got it all-monsters, terrible movies, moonlit costume parties, slippery nipples...

Read this book. Read it now. Quick, before fall ends and spoils the aesthetic. You'll love it, I promise.

Or, well, I hope.

Maybe I'm just goth.

To solidify my previous statement, Wilson (Expensive Mistakes) by Fall Out Boy is a really good song for this book.

First off thank you to Edelweiss for the review copy of this book.
Mild spoilers ahead? I think.

Anyway. The thing about this book is that I feel it markets itself like something with mystery/horror elements. And it doesn’t. At all. It’s more than anything, a coming of age story. It’s not a particularly bad one but it isn’t great either. The writing style is a bit strange and inconsistent. The characters seem to jump from one way of acting to the next. It isn’t entirely cohesive. There were a lot of things I think could have been fleshed out and looked into more but once something was mentioned it wasn’t always touched upon again. ALSO IF YOU GET SHOT BY ANYTHING YOU DONT GET UP AND GO AN HOUR LATER. Okay. Sorry. In conclusion I didn’t not enjoy this book but I didn’t love it either.

The writing and the character beats were campy and over the top, but fit well in their own way with the very dramatic setting and plot points. I wasn't sure about the direction taken in the first half, but the ending wrapped up the MC's character arc pretty well. Overall, went in with no expectations and was pleasantly surprised.

Not sure why I didn't like this book. I like weird things. During the funeral I kept thinking of the smoking grandpa from National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. The older brother was just too odd. It has an Elvira feel to it. So if you like her you'd probably love this book.
