took some time to get hooked but obviously ultimately was. i struggled to keep track in audiobook form without an index of the different uh, regions of the continent but that’s my own auditory ish. can’t wait to finish the series as i’ve already experienced the worst (the two beautiful hopeful chapters on the island with the found family knowing it couldn’t last

I had to take a break early in the book - roughly a quarter of the way in - because everything happening was so inescapably depressing. I needed some space from that to decide whether I was interested enough to continue, and decided that I was. While I appreciate fantasy that includes raw and painful things, I can also only handle so much of it before it completely takes over the entire experience for me - and this book took me up to the edge of my tolerance.

The world and the magic abilities of the people in it ended up being compelling enough for me to continue. I am a sucker for lore, for bits of knowledge revealed here and there until a bigger picture suddenly snaps into view, and Jemisin is great at that!

I loved the worldbuilding, the setting, the plot development, the character development, the characters themselves, the mystery, and the magic. Everything was fresh and unique and engaging. Totally worthwhile.

Excellent start to a fantasy trilogy! I can't wait to see what happens next. Obviously there are a lot of similarities to other fantasy series to start out, but by the end the story is fresh and unique. Lost 1 star because I simply don't like the narrative style of jumping around in time. I also don't like that we didn't know all those characters were the same until later. I will say all things considered it was pretty well executed, as I wasn't too lost with what was going on by the end. I appreciate what those styles of writing are trying to do, but I find it needlessly confusing.
