This is everything I wanted from a fantasy novel! Absolutely loved this book and can’t wait to read the other two.
N. K. Jemisin is an amazing storyteller and it was hard to put the book down. So engaging, so gripping, so entertaining.

This book featured exquisitely crafted characters and worlds. The lore, cultures, geography, rules of fantasy, all were fleshed out beautifully. And I also appreciated the reveal related to the main characters.
However, my major complaint is that there was almost no forward motion throughout the whole book. The characters seemed to simply wander through the story, without a real sense of purpose save exposition for the sake of the reader. I feel like I read 400 pages of exposition and 50 pages of actual story. As interesting as the world was, I didn't find the story itself compelling enough to want to continue on with the series.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, after reading poppy war i was a little afraid of getting back into hyped fantasy books bc that one was very dark and didnt hit the mark for me personally but omg this was so good!! the writing was fantastic and the use of second pov? fantastic, i speculated about halfway thru the book that all three characters were the same person and i loved the way they laid it all out; the magic system was really awesome too and im so intrigued so see where this series goes
