I think Guy Deutscher's head is so far up his ass. This is the last book by him that I'll read. (I read Through the Looking Glass and also didn't like it).
I always think he has such interesting ideas, but his writing is full of strawman arguments and idiotic metaphors. This book was about 30% purple prose and could've been 100 pages shorter.
There's this just truly awful scene where he has a fake lecturer giving a fake lecture at a university, with fake audience members asking questions and it's all written like a transcript and it's gotta be one of the dumbest things I've ever read.
Great ideas. Loses points for unnecessary and burdensome prose. Loses points for sucking up to Saussure so much. Loses major points for using the word "retarded." I also think he's sexist (based on things in this book and The Looking Glass)
