Absolutely heartbreaking, but phenomenal accounting of the process of uncovering the truth behind some of the 20th Century’s most inhumane episodes.

Koff walks you through her career as a forensic anthropologist who worked to unearth mass graves in Rwanda, Bosnia, Croatia and Kosovo. It is a very direct book documenting her day to day experiences of exhuming bodies in mass graves and her personal reflections while she did her work. It's deeply fascinating and profoundly depressing that this work exists, and Koff took such a deep psychological hit to do a lot of good work.
I agree with a lot of the reviews, where the first 2/3rds of this book is really solid, and it feels like it sort of trails off towards the end.

This hovers somewhere between a four and a five. While definitely not a light read by any means, Koff was able to make it an enjoyable read by making it based in anthropology and tying the humanity into it. Some sections dragged, but I felt like I learned a lot about bones and the stories they tell.

Clea Koff takes us through the years she spent working on mass graves, and victims of genocide in various countries. While the crimes that were committed were terrible, Clea manages to keep a sense of humanity and humor around her work, even when it starts to wear on her.
This was a rough week in spots, as we deal with the terrible crimes that can be meted on others, and the realization for some in the areas that these crimes were actually committed. It was a good read though, and I really enjoyed the humanity that the author brought to the pages. She didn't forget why she was there and talked about her passion for helping families find answers. The ages of some of the victims really bothered me, as a mother. I was horrified that this could even take place, but as we have seen through history, humans are capable of truly evil deeds.
Good read overall.
